Endodontists diagnose, prevent, and treat diseases and injuries of the dental pulp. They may also apply medicine to the area to stop an infection. Common reasons to see an endodontist include Tooth decay, Tooth injuries, and Tooth abscess. Endodontic treatment, or root canal treatment, treats the soft pulp tissue inside the tooth. The endodontist will: Place a dental dam around the tooth Open the crown (top) of the tooth and remove the pulp Clean, reshape, and enlarge the root canal using small files For many patients, getting a root canal is no more painful than getting a cavity filled. Most people report feeling comfortable throughout their procedure, feeling pressure and movement at times, but not pain.
